Denny's Fail

Did you enjoy your Grand Slam compliments of Denny’s from the Super Bowl campaign?  For social media fumbles, Denny’s has dropped the ball a few times which is a shame to see.

Denny’s had at least three commercials during the show offering to buy everyone breakfast however if you noticed, they did not mention their Facebook page in any of it.

Customers could have been directed to become friends on Facebook so they then could have printed off a coupon; text messaged a coupon, or sent a coupon to their Smartphone for redemption of a free Grand Slam.  Instead, if you showed up between 6 AM and 2 PM on Tuesday February 9th, you received a free breakfast.

When customers showed up for their free Slam, they were given a coupon book encouraging them to return for discounts and more free stuff but nothing about their Facebook page.  They were also directed to their website to sign up more free stuff and enter contests; once on the site you could then see they have a Facebook and Twitter account.  Great move.

Denny’s really didn’t gain many fans during this time frame, about 6,000.  This past year TGI Fridays built their Facebook fan page by giving away free hamburgers and now has over 915,000 fans.  Within the first few days they have over 50,000 fans.

This was Denny’s 2nd year for this promotion and they must see the benefit of it however on a social media perspective, I’m sure they would have liked a higher return.  They have since posted commercials on their Facebook page encouraging customers to follow them on Facebook.  Not advertising the fan page could have been an over sight.

Now we find out they have Twitter drama which steams from a menu mis-print on their 24 hour menu.  The misprint of Denny’s Twitter name directed customers @dennys, a guy named Denny’s in Taiwan.   Check out the links here that expands on the details.

I will add, both Denny’s and TGI Friday’s are both going a great job on their Facebook accounts interacting with their fans.

As for interacting, I encourage you to join my next webinar for tips and information on how to win at social media which will be Monday, March 9 at 7 PM.  You can register at www.foodservicegeeks.com.
